THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4

HOMEWORK:
Read (and listen to, if you wish) Part 3 of "A Christmas Carol", to bottom of page 32. Annotate each page and do a very thorough SRJ page, being sure to list all the main events in the "Summary" column. Be ready for an oral quiz on the reading tomorrow.

TODAY'S WRITING ASSIGNMENT:

"Why do spirits walk the earth, and why do they come to me?"

"It is required of every man," the Ghost returned, "that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellowmen, and travel far and wide; and if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death. It is doomed to wander through the world -- oh, woe is me! -- and witness what it cannot share, but might have shared on earth, and turned to happiness!" Again the spectre raised a cry, and shook its chain and wrung its shadowy hands. "You are fettered," said Scrooge, trembling. "Tell me why?" "I wear the chain I forged in life," replied the Ghost. "I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it."

Write a three paragraph essay in which you offer one possible interpretation of the above quote. Use one example each of chiasmus and purposeful repetition. Use the 8- or 11-sentence formula for the body paragraph, and label the sentences. When you are finished, please upload the essay to your blog.

* I would take at least 10 full minutes to study the passage and make a graphic organizer. That would leave 35 minutes to write essay.

* Don't forget to use the proper heading.
